Abstract :

The alarming rate of criminal activities such as Boko Haram, kidnapping, bank fraud, financial misappropriation, embezzlement, armed robbery, political thuggery, etc. and their consequences on our economy calls for urgent attention of every development minded Nigerian. The aftermath of these actions manifest in increasing rate of unemployment, insecurity, job losses, wastage of economic resources, unwarranted loss of lives and under-development. These ugly trends are worsened by unquantifiable loss of time, finance and energy in trying to curtail the ugly menace. This paper seeks to examine the impact of crime on sustainable economic growth and development in Nigeria. The paper examined the concept of crime and criminality, sustainable economic growth and development. The causes and types of crime, impact of crime on sustainable economic growth and development in Nigeria were considered as well as the prevention and the control. The authors equally looked at the challenges of crime management in promoting economic growth and development. It is the opinion of the authors that crime can be reduced to its barest minimum by providing functional education that is capable of creating jobs and promoting peaceful co-existence. The need for prompt crime detection and reduction strategies was suggested by the authors.
