Abstract :

This study examined the bureaucratic corruption in the Nigerian public administration. The specific objectives were to ascertain how delay in salaries, ostentatious lifestyle, family pressure and godfatherism contribute to bureaucratic corruption. It is a library type of research and information used were obtained from textbooks, journal articles, seminar and conference papers. The findings revealed that delay in the payment of salary has significant effect on bureaucratic corruption in the study area. The study revealed that family pressure contributes to bureaucratic corruption in the Nigerian public administration. In addition, result showed that desire for ostentatious lifestyle has significant effect on bureaucratic corruption in Nigerian public administration. The ostentatious life style of the bureaucrats manifested in their extravagant attitude, get rich quick syndrome, materialistic nature, love for luxury and love of money haste profit/selfish interests which propel them to engage in corrupt practices at work. Lastly, it was revealed that godfatherism has significant effect on bureaucratic corruption in Nigeria. Based on these findings, this paper recommends amongst others that there should be a glaring presence of EFCC and ICPC in the public sphere to serve as a check on the excesses of public administrators in Nigeria. Also, government should ensure that public managers are paid as at when due. The moral institutions in the society should help preach against ostentatious lifestyle.
